Sometime Monday in Los Angeles, an agent for Manny Pacquiao will meet with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and just like that, the money and the silly weight issue will be resolved for the November 14 bout between Pacquiao and WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto.
I just hope it's some kind of a fight. I figure Cotto can bull rush his way and make it look good for several rounds before Pacquiao dissects him. I have been saying since the Joshua Clottey fight, which Cotto clearly won, that the Margarito and Clottey fights have prematurely taken the competitiveness out of Cotto even though he is only 28.
This does not taint a certain victory for Pacquiao. It's just business as usual in professional boxing. Top Rank has made Cotto a wealthy man and it deserves to get every ounce of energy out of him it can at the highest price before he eventually losses to a journeyman on ESPN 2 someday.
The silly two pound weight issue actually competed for headlines with the conference call last week amongst Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Juan Manual Marquez and promoter Oscar De La Hoya.
That September 19 event has its own problems as as of yet they have not announced the weight they will fight at.
How can the Nevada State Athletic Commission even allow Golden Boy to promote, sell tickets, run commercials, etc. without the most basic of information being finalized and included on a standard state contract?
I guess the next controversy will be the color trunks each will wear into the ring.
